Today’s attack on the Sri Lankan cricket team near the Gaddafi stadium in Lahore was tragic in many ways. First and foremost for the families of the policemen who died in the attack and for the people who got injured. Its a very sad day for them, and it should not have happened. Its also tragic for Pakistan as a whole, an Sri Lankan cricket team was their guest and Pakistan failed to give them adequate security. It just shows the law and order situation in Pakistan. With each passing day government is losing control of the country. But we will leave these matters for the goverments to sort out.
As cricket lovers we are concerned about the future of cricket in Pakistan. Already most teams were not willing to tour Pakistan, after today’s attack there is no way any team is going to Pakistan. Where does thie leave Pakistan Cricket? Pakistan should still be able tour other countries, but the problem is they will have no cricket at home, and hence PCB will have lesser revenues. Lesser revenues mean even lesser money for development of cricket. As it is Pakistan team is going through a low phase, the current team is a far cry from the world class teams of the 1980s and the 1990s. With no cricket at home the situation will only deteriorate.
The cricket world needs a stronger Pakistani team. It brings a certain flair to the game. Pakistan has produced a number of once in a lifetime cricketers like Wasim Akram, Waqar Younis, Imran Khan, Saqlain Mushtaq and countless others. It will be sad to see no cricket being played in Pakistan, but alas we do not have a choice.
this attack on Sri Lanka’s unsuspecting Cricket team is tragic because of the deaths and because of the long term effect this will have internationally
