West Indies ended yet another rain-drenched day with a total of 244 for five, has been a solid display after a middle-order collapse following lunch threatened. Sri Lanka grabbed two wickets off successive overs to restore balance in the third and final Test against the West Indies on Thursday. The West Indies were strongly placed at 241-3 before slipping to 244-5 in their first innings at stumps on a rain-hit second day. It is of no genuine surprise if it manages to deliver a result. Not even a day’s play in terms of overs has been possible as the clouds over the latest venue to make its international debut have leaked as they have in Galle and Colombo.
Brendan Nash, who survived a run-out chance on 32, was unbeaten on 62 and Carlton Baugh had yet to open his account as only 41 overs were bowled in the day due to rain. The West Indies lost well-set Shivnarine Chanderpaul (54) and Dwayne Bravo for a duck in the afternoon session, with spinners Rangana Herath and Ajantha Mendis taking one wicket apiece. Sri Lanka were gaining some vital momentum after some quick wickets. West Indies have batted well, even if none of their batsmen have gone onto make three figure scores. In all, the match seems destined for a draw in a series marred by unfavourable weather.
