New Zealand posted a great total in their 1st Innings and took up a lead of 248-runs. Daniel Vettori batted superbly along with Daryl Tuffey who remained on unbeaten 80 runs. Danish Kaneria was the most successful bowlers and picked up 7-wickets. Pakistan in reply batted quite superbly. They gradually started to build up a good partnership and were 128 for no-loss at the end of day 3. Imran Farhat and Salman Butt didn’t take much of the risk and played some good shorts. They build up the base for the team and not loosing a wicket means they are in really good position. All they need now is to continue their hard-work and steadily progress to the target. So it will be great day coming ahead and this is the last match of the series where both teams are hungry for a win.

Here is Sachin Tendulkar making 155 against the Sth Africans at Bloemfoentein in 2001/02. This is one of the great modern innings. It came on a lively pitch against a quality pace attack and at a very brisk pace.

Few batting performances have been as heroic, or as tragic. Chasing 271 in the fourth innings of a low-scoring match, India experience a familiar top-order collapse, and are sinking fast at 82 for 5. Tendulkar finds an able ally in Nayan Mongia, and rebuilds the innings in a painstaking, un-Tendulkarlike manner. After helping add 136 for the sixth wicket, Mongia departs to an ungainly pull, and Tendulkar’s back is also giving way. Tendulkar shifts up a gear or two, and starts dealing only in boundaries. But one error of judgment and it’s all over. Saqlain Mushtaq defeats his intended lofted on-drive with a magical ball that drifts the other way, catches the outer part of Tendulkar’s bat and balloons up to mid-off. The tail disgrace themselves, and India fall short by a gut-wrenching 13 runs.

To put this Tendulkar innings in perspective, India was playing Pakistan after more than a decade, India vs Pakistan is always a high tension and high pressure game and a Test after a gap of a decade is just pressure cooker scenario, Tendulkar had a serious back injury and would not have played if it was not Pakistan, Tendulkar was the best batsman in the world, he was supposed to play these kind of innings and at 82/5 the hopes of an entire nation rested on him, as always. I can’t imagine an innings played under more pressure and against a better bowling attack – Wasim, Waqar and Saqlain.
