This is just unbelieveable stuff. Shahid Afridi has not scored in a long while, and AB de Villiers has not failed to score in a long while. But the unthinkable happened, Afridi scored and de Villiers did not. I was discussing this today with a bunch of friends, and I said that such is South Africa’s luck in semi finals that today Afridi will score inspite of the fact that he has not in a long long time and somehow AB de Villiers will get a duck (ok, in the end I was off by 1 run). And it happened, though I cant believe it at all.
This South African team was really strong, but they choked yet again. I dont really think that South Africa is going to win a major international trophy for a long long time to come now. They have lost so many now. They were the best team in 92,96,99. In 92 they were done in by a stupid rain rule. In 96 Brian Lara did them in the quarter finals after they had won all the league matches convincingly. In 99 Klusner ran for that fateful run after he had pretty much sealed the match. In 2003 they read the DL sheet incorrectly. In 2007 they ran into Australia in the semi final. But you somehow feel that this was South Africa’s best shot at a major international trophy. They were the pre tournament favourites and were playing really well. The other pre tournament favourites, India was completely off color and already out. With only a shabby Pakistan and West Indies or New Zealand to come, this should have been a walk in the park. But Instead Pakistan have now reached the second final in a row.
The choker tag remains!
